Spider web cake for Halloween

Halloween is not something I knew since I was little. It’s not traditional here, but in the last years it became quite popular. I never was a fan, I’m all about tradition and adapting some foreign holidays just because the stores and popular culture dictates me to do so, is not something I am fond of. I do like one aspect of Halloween though, the creative food decorations.

Halloween pri nas ni bil vedno poznan. Ni naš praznik, ni tradicionalen, a v zadnjih letih je postal precej popularen, predvsem pri mladih, ki tako radi privzemajo ameriško kulturo. To mi ni bilo nikoli všeč, sem precej “staromodno” dekle in privzemaje tujih praznikov, le zato, ker mi trgovine in popularna kultura tako narekujejo, ni nekaj kar je v moji navadi. Priznam pa, da mi je del Halloween-a všeč, zanimivo okrašena hrana.

I was told (by Laurens), that I have to prepare something for his Halloween party at work. I wanted to bake something quick, easy and fun. I remembered a cake I saw on Pinterest a while ago, it was a marshmallow spider web cake and I decided to use the same decoration for my cake. You can see the orginal post and step by step instructions here. As I am not so skilled, my cake might not look so pretty, but for me that was even better as I wanted it to look a bit Halloween-ish.

Laurens mi je naročil, da moram nekaj speči za njegovo službeno Halloween zabavo. Hotela sem pripraviti nekaj hitrega, enostavnega in zabavnega. Spomnila sem se na torto, ki sem jo nekaj časa nazaj videla na Pinterestu, torta s pajkovo mrežo narejeno iz penic (marshmallow). Odločila sem se, da bom enako dekoracijo uporabila na moji torti. Izvirni članek in podrobna navodila lahko vidite tukaj. Ker nisem tako usposobljena moja torta res da ni tako lepa, a meni se to zdi v redu, saj tako izgleda malo bolj Halloweensko.

The cake itself is speculoos and Nutella flavoured and is very easy to prepare. Making the marshmallow web is a bit messy and prepare yourself to have super sticky fingers. The spider is made with fondant, you can make your own fondant, but I used store bought. So this is going to be for Laurens, now I still need to think what I’ll make for Halloween party at my work (I made this awesome brownie truffle graveyard cake).

Spider web speculoos and Nutella cake

For the sponge
  1. 2 eggs
  2. 75 g (1/3 cup) sugar
  3. 1/2 packet (1 tsp) vanilla sugar
  4. 75 g (2/3 cup loosely packed) all purpose flour
  5. 1/4 tsp baking powder
For the speculoos, Nutella cream
  1. 2 cups whole cream
  2. 1/2 cup Speculoos pasta/Biscoff spread
  3. 1/3 cup Nutella
  4. 1/2 cup crumbled Speculoos cookies/gingersnap cookies
Decoration
  1. 2 cups marshmallows
  2. Black fondant
Sponge
  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (360°F) and butter a 20 cm (8 inch) springform pan.
  2. Separate the eggs.
  3. Beat the egg whites until firm peaks form.
  4. Continue beating and slowly add the sugar (spoon by spoon).
  5. Add the egg yolks one by one.
  6. Add the flour and baking powder and mix until just combined. Don't overmix otherwise the sponge wil colapse.
  7. Bake for 20 min until golden on top. To test for doneness insert a wooden toothpick in the middle and it should come out clean.
Cream
  1. Beat the cream.
  2. Add the speculoos pasta/biscoff spread and nutella and mix until combined (don't overmix otherwise it will separate). You can slightly melt the speculoos pasta and nutella if they are to hard to mix.
  3. Mix in the cookie crumbs.
Assembly
  1. Cut the sponge in half.
  2. Spread a third of the cream on one half and cover with the other.
  3. Spread the remaining of the cream all over the cake. Place the cake in the fridge for 1 h.
  4. Melt the marshmallows in the microwave for 1 min. Be careful they can be very hot.
  5. When cool enough to handle take a piece and start stretching it in long thin strings, wrap the cake with the strings. Continue until you're satisfied with the looks.
  6. Make the spider: take a piece of fondant and make a bigger and a smaller ball (torso and head) assemble those. Make the legs by rolling pieces of fondant in long strings, attach those under the torso.
  7. Place the spider on the cake.

Torta je narejena s speculoos in Nutella kremo in je zelo enostavna za pripravo. Izdelava pajkove mreže iz penic je malce nerodna in pripravite se, da boste imeli zelo lepljive prste. Pajek je narejen iz fondanta, fondant lahko pripravite doma, ali uporabite kupljenega.

Biskvit
  1. 2 jajci
  2. 75 g sladkorja
  3. Pol zavojčka vanilijevega sladkorja.
  4. 75 g bele moke
  5. 1/4 čajne žličke pecilnega praška.
Krema
  1. 1/2 litra smetane za stepanje.
  2. 125 ml speculoos paste
  3. 125 ml Nutelle
  4. 50 g zdrobljenih speculoos piškotov.
Dekoracija
  1. Skodelica penic.
  2. Črn fondant.
Biskvit
  1. Pečico segrejemo na 180°C, namastimo okrogel model za torte premera 20 cm.
  2. Ločimo beljake od rumenjakov.
  3. Beljake stepemo v čvrst sneg.
  4. Po žlicah dodajamo sladkor.
  5. Vmešamo rumenjake enega po enega.
  6. Dodamo moko in pecilni prašek, nežno vmešamo. Pazimo, da ne mešamo preveč, saj bo sicer biskvit zbit.
  7. Pečemo 20 min, da se zlato rjavo obarva. Biskvit je pečen, ko zobotrebec vstavljen v sredino pride ven čist.
Krema
  1. Stepemo smetano.
  2. Vmešamo speculoos pasto in Nutello. Pazimo da ne mešamo preveč, saj se sicer krema loči (maščobna in vodna faza). Speculoos pasto in Nutello lahko predhodno malo stopimo, da se lažje vmešata.
Sestava
  1. Biskvit prerežemo na pol.
  2. Tretjino kreme namažemo med biskvita.
  3. S preostalo kremo premažemo torto.
  4. Torto postavimo za 1 uro v hladilnik.
  5. Penice stopimo v mikrovalovni pečici (1 min). Pazimo, da se ne opečemo.
  6. Ko se dovolj ohladijo, da jih lahko tikamo, vzamemo košček in ga razvlečemo v tanke niti. Torto prekrijemo z nitmi.
  7. Naredimo pajka: naredimo eno večjo in eno manjšo žogico za trup in glavo. Naredimo 8 svaljkov, ki bodo služili kot noge. Glavo pritrdimo na trup, noge pod trup.
  8. Pajka postavimo na torto.

  1. I think you did a fantastic job on the spider web cake and I do like the messy look. Some baby spiders crawling out will be ‘cute’ too, haha.

    What about a chocolate cake with tomb stones and gummy worms for your Halloween work party?

    1. Thank you Linda. Yes I got really close to putting some smaller spiders up there, because the big clumps of marshmallow look a bit like spider nests. It’s like you are reading my mind, I was thinking about a brownie cake with “dirt” and worms, I think it’s a great idea.
