Eat! Brussels, drink! Bordeaux

This past weekend I went to Brussels restaurants festival – eat! BRUSSELS, drink! BORDEAUX. This was an event where a wide variety of Brussels restaurants came together in one place and joined forces with wine makers of Bordeaux region, so that the visitors had a chance to try some good food and wine. The weather sucked, at least on the day that I went, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

eatbrussels-55On the festival you could pay with tokens (1 token was 1 euro) and for the wine tastings you had to have a wine pass, the entrance was free of charge. There were different passes you could buy for the even, depending on what you want, if you were only interested in wine, only in food, or if you wanted to get the best of both worlds. I got the “solo pass” (yes, I went alone, just me, good food and wine – nothing to complain about), it was 25 eur and included a wine pass with which you received 10 tasting cupons and 18 tokens. The food prices ranged from 4-15 tokens/euros, but the majority was somewhere between 6-10 tokens/euros. I wanted to try the restaurants which are otherwise a bit too expensive for me and were also here a bit more expensive, so I ended up buying 4 extra tokens.eatbrussels-56Pretekli vikend sem bila v Bruslju na festivalu eat! BRUSSELS, drink! BORDEAUX. To je bil dogodek, kjer se je širok izbor bruseljskih restavracij zbral na enem mestu in združil sile z vinarji iz regije Bordeaux, da smo lahko obiskovalci uživali v dobri hrani in vinu. Kljub slabemu vremenu, sem zelo uživala. eatbrussels-61Na samem festivalu si lahko plačal le z žetoni (1 žeton je bil 1 evro) in za degustacijo vina si moral imeti knjižico s kuponi, vstopnine ni bilo. Lahko si kupil različne pakete odvisno od tega kaj te zanima, samo degustacija vina, samo hrana ali oboje. Jaz sem kupila “solo pass” (ja, sama sem sla, le jaz, dobra hrana in vino – a se lahko pritožujem?), bil je 25 evrov in vseboval knjižico s kuponi za degustacijo vina in 18 žetonov. Cena hrane je bila med 4-15 žetoni/evri, v večini pa med 6-10 žetoni/evri. Ker sem želela pokusiti hrano iz restavracij, ki so sicer malo predrage za moj žep in so bile tudi tudi tu dražje, sem na koncu kupila se 4 dodatne žetone.
eatbrussels-54The event was organised in Parc de Bruxelles (in French) or Warandenpark (in Dutch), this is a big park in front of the Royal Palace and the Belgian parliament. The perfect location for such an event, sadly it was raining, so you had to stay under the tent. It would be lovely on a sunny day, but, oh well, welcome to Belgium.eatbrussels-16Festival je bil organiziran v Parc de Bruxelles (v francoščini) or Warandenpark (v nizozemščini), to je velik park pred Kraljevo palačo in belgijskim parlamentom. Odlična lokacija za tak dogodek, na žalost je deževalo, zato smo morali ostati pod šotorom. Bilo bi bolj prijetno na sončen dan, ampak ja, dobrodošli v BelgijiImage10There were about 20 restaurants from Brussels and 10 from abroad, each offering their specialities and with such a vast amount of delicious dishes it was very hard to chose just s few to try. I mean come on, there were more than 100 dishes and I am not good in deciding. In places that I go often I always end up eating the same thing because I just can’t decide what else to try, sometimes when I feel adventurous I ask somebody else to order for me, then I don’t need to decide (note, it’s been a while since I felt adventurous).
eatbrussels-25Predstavilo se je okoli 20 restavracij iz Bruslja in 10 iz tujine, vsaka je na pokušino ponudila svoje specialitete in s tako ponudbo je bilo zelo težko izbrati le nekaj od njih. Daj no, bilo je več kot 100 jedi in jaz nisem človek, ki se odloča z lahkoto. Tam kamor hodim pogosto na koncu vedno jem eno in isto stvar, zato ker se preprosto ne morem odločit kaj bi drugega izbrala, včasih ko se počutim bolj drzno, naročim komu drugemu, da izbere zame, tako se mi ni treba odločati (opomba, zelo dolgo je tega odkar sem se nazadnje počutila drzno).

I ended up trying up three different dishes, lets say I had an appetizer, main dish and dessert. My first dish was filo sats with: herb cheese or salmon cheese or meat from Notos restaurant. It was filo pastry with different filling, something like börek. It was good, the pastry was perfect, not to dry as these things sometimes and just oily enough to still be crunchy, my favourite was the one with salmon cheese.
eatbrussels-13Na koncu sem pokusila tri jedi, dajmo reč, da sem imela predjed, glavno jed in sladico. Moja prva jed je bil izbor pit iz vlečenega testa z zeliščnim sirom, lososovim sirom ali mesnim nadevom restavracije Notos. Nekaj podobnega kot burek z različnimi nadevi. Bile so res dobre, testo je bilo ravno pravšnje, ne presuho kar se včasih zgodi pri takih jedeh in ravno prav mastno in hrustljavo, najljubša mi je bila tista z lososovim sirom.eatbrussels-14My second choice was the restaurant Tram Experience, check their website they have an interesting concept. I chose one of their menus and what I got were buffalo beads, tomato caviar with olive oil and basil & Sardinian bread and egg at 63°, Grana Padano cream, pancetta crumble, croutons & season truffle. Let me explain what I got, because I didn’t really know what it was when I read it. Buffalo beads are small balls of buffalo mozzarella, I don’t really know what tomato caviar is, but it looked like those things you put in bubble tea that taste like tomato, basically this was a very fancy Caprese salad. The second dish was – a baked egg, with the most amazing Grana Padano cream, truffle cream topped with crunchy pacetta and croutons, it was delicious.
eatbrussels-50Moja druga izbira je bila restavracija Tram Experience, poglejte si njihovo spletno stran, saj imajo res zanimiv koncept. Izbrala sem si enega izmed njihovih menijev in kar sem dobila so bile bivolje kroglice, paradižnikov kaviar z olivnim oljem in baziliko ter sardinski kruh in jajce na 63°, Grana Padano krema, drobtine pancete, kruhove kocke in tartuf. Naj razložim kaj je to bilo, ker vsaj meni iz prebranega ni bilo najbolj jasno kaj bom dobila. Bivolje kroglice so bile kroglice bivolje mozzarelle, ne vem kaj naj bi bil paradižnikov kaviar, izgledalo je kot majhni vodni baloncki z okusom po paradižniku, v bistvu je jed bila neka pošminkana solata Caprese. Druga jed pa je dokaj jasna – pešeno jajce z odlično Grana Padano kremo, kremo iz tartufov in hrustljavo panceto in kruhovimi kockami. Oboje je bilo odlično.eatbrussels-49And of course I had to have a dessert, and what a dessert it was, a gianduja chocolate dome coated with bitter chocolate, grilled hazelnuts, raspberry, mango and passion fruit coulis from La Truffle Noire. It was perfect, no other words needed.

Seveda sem morala imeti sladico, in to kaksno, kupola iz gianduja čokolade prelita z grenko čokolado, praženimi lešniki, malinovim, mangovim in pasjonkinim sirupom iz La Truffle Noire. Bilo je perfektno, brez dodatnega besedičenja.eatbrussels-51In between eating I had 10 wine tasting cupons to use. 10 tastings is a lot, I could feel the wine in my head after 5 of them, at the end I used 7 of them and gave the rest to a lucky bypasser. The wine was very good, but since I don’t know much about it (just what I like and what I don’t), I’m not going to write to much about that.

Med obroki sem imela čas, da porabim 10 kuponov za degustacijo. 10 degustacij je veliko in že po peti se mi je vino prikradlo v glavo, na koncu sem porabila 7 kuponov in ostale 3 podarila naključnemu mimoidočemu. Vino je bilo res dobro, ker pa o njem ne vem veliko (le to ali mi je dobro ali ne), o tem ne bom pisala na dolgo.Image7While scanning all the stands I also found some free tastings, yeeey free food. On one of those I got the chance to try chocolate with crickets, it was a small cricket and there was chocolate, everything tastes good with chocolate. And I visited the Slovenian stand, they gave me a piece of Kranjska sausage, it felt like home. They had a nice menu on offer, a tasting of Kanjska sausage, Slovenian carrot potica and Kratochwill beer.Image6Ko sem se sprehajala mimo stojnic sem odkrila tudi nekaj zastonj pokušanj, juhu zastonj hrana. Na eni od teh sem imela priložnost pokusiti čokolado s črički, bil je majhen čriček in bila je čokolada, vse je dobro s čokolado. In obiskala sem slovensko stojnico, kjer sem dobila košček Kranjske klobase, počutila sem se kot doma. Njihova ponudba je bila pokušanje Kranjske klobase, korenčkove potice in pivo Kratochwill.Image4Overal there was a lot going on to keep you busy, from cooking demonstrations to different start-ups that presented themselves, producers selling different things and workshops. I went to one of the workshops by Mmmmh! it was about eclairs. I already made eclairs before, but I wanted to know if there are some extra tips and tricks, and I really felt like eating one. Maybe I didn’t learn anything new, but it was interesting even so. 

I really enjoyed the whole event and I can not wait for next year!Image5Veliko je bilo dogajanja in z lahkoto si se zamotil, od kuharskih demonstracij do različnih start-upov, ki so se predstavljali, pa proizvajlci, ki so prodajali različne stvari in razne delavnice. Sla sem na eno teh Mmmmh! delavnic, o eklerjih. Eklerje sem pred tem že delala, a me je zanimalo če so kakšni posebni triki, ki ti olajšajo delo in res sem jih hotela jesti. Res, da se nisem naučila nič novega, a je bilo kljub temu zanimivo.

Resnično sem uživala v dogajanju in komaj čakam da bom prihodnje leto spet!
