Brunch in Boom

A couple of months ago, I stumbled upon a Facebook page for a new brunch place in Ghent, with a very interesting concept. On their website it said you could only eat there if you made a reservation, which you could make after an invite (for which you just had to send an email), once there, everybody sits together at a big table, which gives you the chance to meet some new people. I was intrigued. Boom was not yet open when I first found out about it, but I immediately knew I wanted to try it out. I patiently waited for it to open and when they started to take reservations I quickly made one. Their concept is simple – healthy and natural. What you get are delicious vegetarian dishes made with seasonal produce. Their menu is set and changes every two months.

Pritegnilo me je. Njihov koncept je enostaven – zdravo in naravno. Kar dobiš, so slastne vegetarjanske jedi, pripravljene iz sezonske zelenjave. Njihov menu je fiksen in se spremeni vsaka 2 meseca.

Boom is a part of WATT, a newly opened creative space where craft, art, design and eco-friendly lifestyle come together. I think that it’s safe to say that it’s a hipsters kind of place, you get the idea, right. It might not be a place where I would often hang out, but with good food you can lure me (almost) anywhere. Anyway, back to Boom. The dining room was open and bright (the fact that the weather was amazingly sunny also helped), very clean, not much distractions. Fake grass floors, a green wall and greenery hanging from a ceiling together with a long wooden table made it seem like you’re eating out in the open (just without the annoying bugs flying around and buzzing in your ear). What I didn’t like so much was the music, it was classical, which I normally like, but here it was almost sacral. At a certain point, when Ave Maria was playing, I had a flash back to a horror movie I once saw (I don’t remember the name anymore) and there was a scene where people were sitting at a big table and there were bad things happening in slow motion with Ave Maria as a soundtrack, but I digress so let’s get back to the point of this post. Our brunch was not like in a horror movie, far (very far) from it, but me and my sister just have a very vivid imagination. So bottom line, if I would change something about it, it would be the music.

Morda ni ravno lokacija, kjer me pogosto vidite, ampak z dobro hrano me lahko zvabite (skoraj) kamorkoli. Kakorkoli, nazaj k Boom-u.

And now to (at least for me) the most important part – food. As I mentioned at the beginning, everything was vegetarian and it can also be made vegan, gluten free or lactose free. Pretty awesome, right? The food was delicious, you can see the menu above, but since it’s in Dutch let me tell you what we got. We had soldiers with carrot pesto (yummy, awesome idea to use carrots, stealing!), feta and hummus, fresh cheese with raddish, coconut yogurt with quinoa granola and carrot cake (very fluffy and sooo good), red beet carpaccio with blue cheese and figgs, buckwheat pancake with sweet potato puree (awesome combination), red beet burger with avocado and red onion (my favourite, it was delicious, definitely have to make it at home), panna cotta with hazelnut and chocolate (it tasted like healthy Nutella!) and scone with red fruit and clotted cream. Needless to say, I really enjoyed it. What might put you off a bit is the price, it’s 35 € for a menu, but it’s worth noting the fact that they promise biological and sustainable produce. This is clearly not a place you’d go on a weekly basis, but it’s a nice treat for once in a while. If you’re into this kind of food I would definitely recommend it!

Until next time! K.

In zdaj k (vsaj zame) najbolj pomembnem delu – hrani.

Do naslednjič! K.

  1. This place sounds incredible! I love the concept. My parents once told me about a place where they used to eat in Manhattan (maybe Brooklyn) NY where meals were served at one large table like you describe. Everything was family-style. My parents describe that the waiters would come to the large table of people, who were strangers when they walked in, and shout, “who had the shrimp” “who had the chicken” etc… and everyone would pass the dishes down the line to the person who ordered it. And then everyone would share everything! It sounded so magical. Your restaurant reminded me of that story. Your place looks a bit more upscale, but equally delicious. Thanks for sharing this <3

    1. Oh I like the idea of the place you describe as well, sounds really nice. As you said, here things are maybe not soo casual, but I enjoyed it nontheless.
